What is push-to-talk?

Push-to-talk is an input method where the microphone is active only while you press and hold a button, and stops the moment you release it. It originated in two-way radio and is now used in apps that want intentional, clearly bounded audio capture. Because the mic is off by default, there is no ambient or continuous listening.

  • The microphone is live only during the hold, never in the background.
  • Each press defines a clear start and end for a capture session.
  • Favors privacy and intent over hands-free convenience.

How Overscope relates

Overscope uses push-to-talk as its only voice entry point: hold the button to speak, release to stop. There is no always-listening or hotword mode.
